OPENING KEYNOTE - "BUILDING A SMARTER PLANET: LOWER COSTS, IMPROVE EFFICIENCY AND REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT" Presented by: Rich Lechner, VP Energy & Environment, IBM Discussion: The world is becoming increasingly instrumented, intelligent and connected - in a word, 'smarter'. As it does, the energy & environment challenges and opportunities that confront our planet can be addressed through a combination of innovative technology, business analytics & optimization, and deep industry insight. Whether driven primarily by cost imperatives, operational inhibitors, or stewardship goals, most organizations today are seeking ways to reduce energy use and carbon emission across all of their infrastructure and operations. The CIO and IT are key to building sustainable organizations and a Smarter Planet. There continues to be tremendous opportunity to improve the efficiency of data centers and IT through energy & thermal efficient technology; increased utilization of assets through consolidation and virtualization; and active energy management. However, IT will also play a key role in enabling the optimization of all business processes - from supply chains to manufacturing to work force management - for energy, carbon, water, and waste. Rich will cover some of the best practices from various industries around the world including IBM. |

Bob Bonham, Director ITS, SAS Institute Discussion: CIOs and IT leaders are under ever-increasing pressure to improve the agility and cost effectiveness of their IT services. In this session, we will separate Cloud Computing hype from reality, review challenges and constraints associated with evolving Cloud Computing models, and address the opportunities to leverage Cloud Computing technologies and services provisioned within your own internal IT environment as well from "the Cloud". |

"STIMULATING MORE THAN THE ECONOMY: WHY CIOS NEED TO BE CONCERNED WITH THE AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT"
Presented by: James Norment, Ward and Smith, P.A. Panelist: Jose Cortina, Partner, Ward and Smith, P.A. Discussion: The 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is expected to generate nearly a trillion dollars in accelerated and new federal government spending before the end of 2010. Although most pundits focus on the economic stimulus impact generated by the ARRA, the law also stimulates new regulations and legal issues related to IT and data management. Even CIOs previously uninvolved in government contracts and procurement may find themselves subject to a new set of complicated ARRA regulations. The group discussion will focus on three questions: First, how does the ARRA stimulate IT spending? Second, what IT compliance strings come attached to ARRA funds? And third, how can CIOs help protect their IP and data licensed and compiled as a result of ARRA spending?

"APPLYING ECONOMIC METRICS IN CONSIDERING STORAGE TCO" Moderator by: Lee Abrahamson Senior Director, Storage Management, Hitachi Data Systems
Panelists: Gary L. Sloat, SVP, IT Operations, Senior Manager, Branch Bank and Trust (BB&T)
Scott Stevens, VP, Enterprise Storage and Windows Systems Manager, BB&T
Discussion: Many IT planners make the mistake of assuming that purchasing low-cost disk solutions will drive down the total cost of ownership (TCO) for storage, but price alone does not equate to reducing the total cost of disk ownership. Purchasing only cheaper disk solutions to reduce short-term capital expense (CAPEX) can often produce a negative long-term impact on operating expense (OPEX), particularly when you consider that the purchase price of disk hardware represents only 20 to 25 percent of the TCO (TCO-per-TB/unit per Year) for the storage infrastructure. As the price of disk continues to decline (and approaches zero), other methods besides lowering CAPEX must be explored to impact multiyear costs of storage ownership. This session will examine the application of economic principals and cost metrics as a management process for continuous improvements in the data center. |
