Paul Stewart, Manager, IT Enterprise Strategy IT ST DG, Siemens Energy, Inc.
David Collier, Manager, Eminent Scholar, Alico Chair, Operations Mgmt., Lutgert College of Business, Florida Gulf Coast Univ.
Discussion: Benchmarking is a powerful and persuasive marketing tool and the gist of a great marketing campaign is having a compelling “story” to tell. For the story to truly resonate, you need to understand the audience; or perhaps audiences. Although selected metrics that we have used to feed the IT beast in the past remain relevant to IT, consider the story in the grander scheme. A scheme in which you balance the focus of internal IT benchmarks (e.g., system and service reliability) with external benchmarks designed to enable the business of the enterprise (e.g. customer interaction and delivery innovation). The strategic process-oriented goals of the organization must drive the benchmarking initiative. Select your metrics from the top down while keeping in mind that one size doesn’t fit all. Different industries have different benchmarking needs. A multinational conglomerate supported by a centralized IT organization with global reach has a radically different approach to benchmarking than an IT shop in a local government driven by social needs and constituent demands. And yet they share the duty to their respective organizations to provide decision-support criteria, measures and assessment methods fueled by maturity models, benchmark data and performance indicators. |

Discussion: Just think of the times you entered into a conversation with colleagues about strategy, alignment, and architecture only to realize you were talking about related, but different things. I believe most would agree that this is a complicated topic and many non-IT execs would say we do not get it. For this reason our panel of experts will attempt to answer the following questions:
- What are strategy, alignment, and architecture?
- Does strategy come before alignment and architecture, or is there is another order or no order at all?
- What advantages do organizations gain by practicing strategy development, requirements alignment, and enterprise architecture?
- How does IT and the rest of the organization benefit from them?
- How have organizations solved this puzzle?
