"A SMARTER APPROACH TO ARCHIVING"
Presented by: Eric Naiburg, Director, IBM Linda Clark, ECM Americas, Governance, Risk, & Compliance, IBM
Discussion: We continue in the midst of an Information Explosion. The amount of information captured is growing rapidly as evidenced by IDC estimates that 45GBs of data currently exists for each person on the planet with a staggering growth rate of 60% annually. Not only do we capture this information, but we are mandated to retain it and must be able to easily search and decipher the information all while reducing costs, not hindering the performance of existing applications and protecting the privacy of the information at the same time. This tremendous growth is forcing organizations to take a smart approach to managing the information across the organization, with flexible archival deployment options - on premise, appliance, cloud or hybrid. It starts with classification and archiving the information, making it accessible. In this session, you will learn strategies for managing the information explosion including archiving, storage and best practices which can be part of a greater information governance process. Some of the topics will include:
- How do I even identify what information should be archived?
- How do I manage information over its lifespan and how do I make archive management and infrastructure choices?
- How do I deliver Information Governance in a consistent, defensible and cost effective manner?

Discussion: The Obama Administration has embarked on an ambitious agenda to reform the healthcare system in the United States in order to improve the health of the American population as well as reduce the cost of providing health and wellness services. Information technology, in the form of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, provides the basic building block for achieving these goals. To accelerate the adoption and meaningful use of electronic technology across the healthcare industry, the American Recovery and Revitalization Act (ARRA), subtitled: Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), set aside almost $20 Billion to fund the implementation and integration of EMR systems and creation of Health Information Exchange (HIE) communities across the country. This panel will discuss the major provisions of ARRA HITECH, how the industry is responding to automate and integrate itself horizontally and vertically, and what changes in culture, care and cost we expect to see as a result of this revolution in healthcare operations.
