"VIRTUALIZATION AND CLOUD COMPUTING: UNDERSTANDING THE DATA MANAGEMENT HURDLES TO FULLY REALIZE THEIR BENEFITS"
Moderated by: Steve Bulmer, CTO, Consonus Technologies
Panelists: Joshua Reed, Dir. Infrastructure Services, EarthLink Hyun Jin O, VP IT Operations, Web.com Ken Rabun, CIO, Manhattan Associates Discussion: Many IT organizations have completed the first wave of virtualization and are looking to expand on these gains. Virtualization of Tier 1 applications, disaster recovery automation, improved manageability and the development of private cloud infrastructures are all on the solutions roadmap. However, new IT management tools and processes, particularly those regarding data management, need to be analyzed and understood before these new gains can be realized. The approaches used in the past surrounding data protection, backup/recovery, information movement and distribution, must be updated before the promise of advanced virtualization and cloud computing can be fulfilled. In this session we’ll discuss the next wave in virtualization and cloud computing plus develop an understanding of what adjustments to data protection and storage approaches are paramount to future success. We will investigate the often unanticipated impact of virtualization on the underlying IT infrastructure and processes as well as the ways in which people are maximizing these efforts.Back to Top |

"ENERGY INFORMATICS"
Presented by: Richard Watson, Department of MIS, Terry College University of Georgia Discussion: Energy Informatics, a new subfield of Information Systems being developed by the presenter and Dr. Marie-Claude Boudreau, recognizes the role that IS can play in reducing CO2 emissions. The core idea can be expressed quite concisely. Energy + Information < Energy Energy Informatics is concerned with analyzing, designing, and implementing an integrated system to increase the efficiency of energy demand and supply systems. This requires collection and analysis of energy data sets to support optimization of energy distribution and consumption networks. The seminar discusses the interdependent roles of the major elements of an energy system: stakeholders, eco-goals, sensor networks, flow networks, sensitized objects, and an information system. It describes how sensor networks are critical to the optimization of energy supply and sensitized objects support demand management. Examples from current practice are used extensively, in particular an award winning case on UPS, to illustrate the core ideas of Energy Informatics and the seminar concludes with action steps for practitioners. |

 Michele Kersey |
"A SMARTER APPROACH TO ARCHIVING"
Presented by: Rocky Freudenberg, Field Engineer, IBM
Michele Kersey, eDiscovery Solutions, ECM Archive and Governance, IBM Discussion: We continue in the midst of an Information Explosion. The amount of information captured is growing rapidly as evidenced by IDC estimates that 45GBs of data currently exists for each person on the planet with a staggering growth rate of 60% annually. Not only do we capture this information, but we are mandated to retain it and must be able to easily search and decipher the information all while reducing costs, not hindering the performance of existing applications and protecting the privacy of the information at the same time. This tremendous growth is forcing organizations to take a smart approach to managing the information across the organization, with flexible archival deployment options - on premise, appliance, cloud or hybrid. It starts with classification and archiving the information, making it accessible. In this session, you will learn strategies for managing the information explosion including archiving, storage and best practices which can be part of a greater information governance process. Some of the topics will include:
- How do I even identify what information should be archived?
- How do I manage information over its lifespan and how do I make archive management and infrastructure choices?
- How do I deliver Information Governance in a consistent, defensible and cost effective manner?

LUNCHEON KEYNOTE - "GROOMING THE NEXT CIO" Presented by: Darwin John, Former CIO, FBI Discussion: Darwin will speak to the realities of today and the requirements of the role of CIO going forward which will be both more complex and require more leadership capability. Beyond that he will speak to the "call to action" for those of us in the field, if we are to be responsive. This call to action will be about leadership that can deliver the basics of IT in a flawless manner. It is about earning ones way into the inner circle of leadership of the enterprise with earned trust, respect and credibility. It is about leading change in ones self and others. Therefore what must we do or do differently. This will include proactive approaches to the transformation required between where we are and where we must be. Finally, will be a period of dialog with the attendees to explore, challenge, probe and test concepts presented.Back to Top |
